Master’s Degree Program in Kinesiology with an Emphasis in Coaching

The Department of Kinesiology at Texas Woman’s University in partnership with the National Fastpitch Coaches Association is offering a Master's of Science Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching. This program is founded on the need to prepare, at the post-graduate level, quality coaches for leadership roles to meet the challenging demands of coaching in the 21st century. Such a need is accomplished through this highly relevant program that combines theory and practice by drawing on the collective talents of both partners. To further accommodate the challenging schedule of the working coach, most of the program is taught online. All online classes use Blackboard as the delivery platform.

The master's program is a 36-hour, non-thesis option curriculum emphasizing the development of skills, techniques and concepts necessary to become a master coach. The degree plan systematically infuses the theoretical bases of coaching with the most relevant softball practices. A student can potentially complete the masters in three years by averaging 12-semester hours a school year. While the majority of the coursework will be taken online, students will attend a 3-day workshop on the TWU campus during the summer term of the second year of the program.

A new cohort will be formed every two years with the next cohort beginning in the fall of 2009. A cohort must have at least 15 master’s students who progress together through the sequence of course offerings and graduate together. During each fall, spring, and summer session the students in a cohort will enroll in the designated class (either a professional development course or a required course). There are eight professional development classes taught through TWU that have a specific NFCC workshop requirement. The cohort follows a specific schedule and there are no substitutions for the professional classes. Therefore, it is each student’s responsibility to take the appropriate NFCC class before the scheduled TWU course. There are also 12 hours of required coursework; the cohort will come to the TWU campus for three days to begin two of the required courses, the Research Methods and Statistics courses.
